1  Project Assistance / Betatesting / Re: Forge: Chapter One - 2nd beta-stage (Post to volunteer as tester) on: March 28, 2013, 05:40:20 AM
2nd Beta-stage will begin on the 7th of April. I'll reveal who are the chosen candidates some days before, and give them the Beta-Tester status which grants access to the Beta-testing discussion private topic.
You will find info and guidelines there.

Can't wait!

You already know who I am, so I don't know if I need to write a lot about myself, but alright.

I'm Alex IDV, a 19-year-old video game enthusiast from Sweden. My favorite genre is easily adventure games, and one of my favorites is Loom. I've replayed it several times, both the Talkie version and the FM-Towns one, my favorite being FM-Towns with its music and character portraits, so I'm really looking forward to Forge.

I don't know what else to write here... I guess I could mention that I really like translating texts from English to Swedish and vice versa for some reason. I've beta-tested some Mario fan-games that my internet friends have developed, if that counts for anything.

Thanks for your interest Aladdin (also, nice avatar).

We're still far from having the complete game ready, but progress has been constant throughout the life-span of this project. Slow, but constant.

If you want my two cents, I hope neither Lucas nor other major companies will ever attempt a sequel. I don't like the style and feel of new adventure games, and, on top of that, I'd love Quill O' the Wisp to release both Forge and Fold. Seriously.
Well, LucasArts is owned by Disney now, and they're supposedly very lenient with fan games, at least as long as they're family friendly, but I don't know.

Nice to hear everything's going well!

On a slightly related note, have you thought about doing The Fold too, eventually? I mean, yeah, that would be far in the future, but I just wonder if you've thought about plot ideas and stuff.

Sorry Alex, but it would be very unprofessional to inlcude you at this moment, although I'd really like to. There has been plenty of time, and I was 100% sure that you hadn't missed the topic. My guess was that you didn't want to taint your playing experience by seeing an intermediate, buggy version, but I understand now that this wasn't the reason you didn't sign in.
If I were to include you, I'd have to do the same with other people, but unless some of the current testers resign, I'm against that.

Your help offer is appreciated though and if I'd decide to open the subscriptions once again you'd be my first choice because you are, and I'm sure you always will be. a piece of Forge.
Yeah, I understand, and it's okay. It would indeed be very unfair to let me in after the deadline has passed, and I respect your choice.

I suppose you could say I'm back. While I still have browsed the Forge forums, I have felt too busy to do beta testing, so I didn't sign up for that. Not sure if it's too late for that now, but if you want me to help out with it, I'm available.

Meant to reply earlier, but

Take your time - while I appreciate that you're keeping us up to date on what's going on, there's no deadline. Glad to hear your sister is getting better. Take care!

Speaking of voice acting...

Will it be possible to turn them on and off while playing? Sometimes I prefer to just read what the characters are saying, and imagining my own voices.

Although I'm not part of the production team myself (is there a team at all, or is it only Abisso?), I'm pretty sure Forge will only feature arrangements of classic music, just like Loom.

I check for new posts on this forum at least once a day Smiley

EDIT: And it's nice to hear about the domain name. Forge.freeiz.com doesn't have the same ring to it as forgegame.com!

That's some wonderful news!

I've also re-organized part of the plot in order to transform a long cut-scene into a fully playable section.
Thank you for this! I've always preferred when the story is presented as you play, as opposed to in cut scenes.
12  Project Assistance / Translation / Re: Swedish translator on: December 10, 2011, 03:20:15 PM
I agree, Al. What's most important is don't make the names sound awkward, and on top of that, since there's never been a Swedish translation for Loom, changing names could make it hard for people to understand what's going on. For the Italian translation it's a different matter, since we're big fans of subbing / translating and such. Until recently (1950 or so) we also used to translate hystorical character's names, which is ridiculous imho. I know for sure that there is an Italian translation of Loom, although I've never checked, so I will do my translation according to that one.

P.S. Would you mind sending me your email address and your website (if you have one)? I'm wrapping things up, creating a huge table of all potential and actual staff in order to keep track of things. Thanks.
Yeah, that's a good point. I'll send my email and website to you in a PM.

Also, please don't call me Al Smiley

Sorry Alex, I read your PM and I was sure I had answered, but I was wrong it seems.

Sure, I don't mind you changing some things if you think it would help and will sound good. But for personal names I'm not totally sure: actually I'm not a big fan of changing original names. Rusty Nailbender is pretty smooth and nice in English, I don't know if Rost Spikböj sounds equally nice. But I'll trust your judgement. Forge is a personal name but it's a noun as well, so that surely should be translated inside the game (not in the title: you can add the subtitle as you suggested though).

Apologies for the late answer, Alex, it's always a pleasure to interact with our first fan. Smiley

While I'm usually not a fan of changing names either, names with meanings are different in my opinion. In the world of Loom, characters have names with themes depending on what guild they belong to, and that would be lost to people who don't speak English.

That being said, it could be hard to translate some names and still make them sound good (Fleece's surname comes to mind), so maybe it would be best to leave all of them untranslated. Translating some and leaving some isn't an option Smiley
14  Project Assistance / Translation / Re: Swedish translator on: December 10, 2011, 06:13:41 AM
I think I sent a PM to you about this, but I didn't get a reply, so I'll post here instead:

Would you be fine with me translating names that have meanings? For instance, for a Swedish person who doesn't understand English, the name Rusty Nailbender doesn't mean anything. Translating it to something like Rost Spikböj (literally "Rust Nailbend", but sounds like a name) would be ideal in my opinion.

Also, if it's possible, adding the subtitle "Smedjan" ("The Forge") to the Swedish version would be neat, as I would translate the Forge in the game.

Nice to hear! I would love to donate, but I don't have a steady income, and Christmas is coming up.

Forge forever!
