136  General Discussion / Adventure Gaming - Loom Island / New to LOOM? Catch up... on: July 26, 2009, 11:37:00 AM
Remember Loom? The fun little adventure game from 20 years ago?

Well if you need a refresher course on the wonderful little game, I thought I would provide you all with the resources needed to make the most of your memory-lane experience.

STEP 1: Listen to the Audio Drama
Shipped with the original releases of LOOM was a 30 minute Audio Drama on cassette. The Audio Drama establishes the continuity of LOOM and acts as a prequel to the LOOM story. It tells the story of the protagonists mother, the Weavers, and seamlessly segways into the start of the game.

STEP 2: The Book of Patterns
Also shipped with the game was a Book Of Patterns. This 12 page booklet provided the player with even more backstory about the Weavers and their drafts. To add function to the Book, the player would mark down the sequence of threads into designated slots to avoid loosing scraps of paper. The game was DOS after all.

Step 3: Play the game!
All versions of the game have their own benefits, from 16 color nostalgia, to full vga backgrounds, or character portraits. My encouragement is to play them all and spot some of the differences.

Thanks to sag from the boards here, he has hosted each of the three common LOOM versions here for the community. As well, he has a fourth file for documentation, extras, and the Audio Drama. Thank you sag! Here are the links:

SAG's Download Pack!

How To:
First download my installers, as linked above

Next download: ScummVM

Run '<insertloomversionhere>.exe' wherever you like, it'll extract into the same folder.

Run the ScummVM installer.

Run ScummVM once you've installed it, and 'Add Game' for each version you've downloaded. Edit any settings you may like, such as windowed or full screen. That's it!

You're done, now go enjoy a classic.

Well here we are, the user interface for FORGE. We're simply referring to these as Gauntlets for now.

Tremendous appreciation goes out to TayokoArt for the Gauntlet design. I would love to hear thoughts regarding them, questions and curiosities welcome too.

Thank you all.

Duke here.

Well this little project is my brain child. I've seen many attempts at a LOOM sequel come and go over the years, some more polished than others. While I cannot guarantee a complete game with hours of entertainment, my immediate goal is to give the public a fresh LOOM experience that will take you back to the Age of the Great Guilds.

I hope a few of my artists and programmers may drop a line here in the next few days if they're interested, and we can get to know each other there.

There are no immediate time lines in place, nor is there a current playable demo ready for release. But, I promise that anything relevant will be posted on the board as a teaser, or as an official production release.

Contact: If you wish to contact me you can do so in the following ways.
1) Create a topic with your question. others may have the same question.
2) Message me on the board here, nice easy way to track communication.
3) Email, send me a direct email at Da_Duke2000@hotmail.com.
4) MSN, same addy as above  Smiley.

On a personal note, I'm 25, and live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I keep thinking I'm the only Canadian into the adventure scene, not that I mind people from overseas at all  Smiley.

Welcome to the Forge Demo Board!
THIS GAME WILL BE FREE-FREEWARE!

We're glad to have you hear and to see another LOOM fan excited about our project. What project you may ask? Why, we're creating a game of course! Using the AGS engine, myself and a small but growing team of artists and scripters, have come together to begin work on a demo of Forge, a (free) LOOM sequel.

What is LOOM? I would hope if you're here then you already know. Still, lets provide some background on the topic. LOOM was an adventure game released in 1990 with a simple goal; To provide the player with an interactive story, a game designed to be finished. While the puzzles seemed simple and the game short, for the time it was released, LOOM was a pioneer for adventure games in the realms of Graphics, Storyline and the functionality of the Interface. LOOM was a game where the player could not die, and no inventory was implemented. The player could experience the story for what it was, and immerse themselves in its wonder.

In tribute to one of the very first games in my memory, a game which a talented few worked on to bring to life, our team hope to offer a product that will do justice to what LOOM means to so many. Our intentions are to produce a quality Demo, with Rusty Nailbender as our protagonist. We will follow his quest to rescue his Guild from the clutches of Chaos, the consequences of which weigh heavily on everyone, living or dead, with their souls trapped on the Inside.

I hope to see many new members join in the following weeks and months, and I hope to keep a constant supply of new media and documentation to keep curiosity at bay.

I hope you all enjoy your stay here, and I hope to hear from many of you as well.
