General Discussion / Adventure Gaming - Loom Island / Re: What was it that made that game so good?

A really useful post.
I think what made Loom so cool was the atmosphere it successfully created. And this is a result of spot-on graphics and soundtrack for sure. Another really important thing was the originality of the interface. Many games after Loom stick to the classic "open, close, use" etc. so Loom remains something unrivalled and very original for the time it was produced.
But I'm not sure that the fact it was so easy and linear has been so important for its success. Actually I believe those were two of Loom's weakest points. A game you can complete in less than 2 hours, probably never getting stuck even at Expert mode, offers neither much re-playability nor challenge for the player. I'd like to correct these aspects a bit in the Forge.

conclaive of guilds... waaaay dope idea
the consensus should be something like "run away, give up" and rusty does a little braveheart speech or something.
or perhaps, the guilds will not give him help, so he challenges chaos on his own, takes down the anvil, however does not defeat chaos, either way he inspires the guilds to take action after.
It's very Star-Wars-like! And I like it! By the way, it seems to me like something that should take place in the Fold, not in the Forge. As per your other suggestions in the previous post, well, they all seem reasonable, but if there's a fight between Rusty and Chaos, I'd take advantage of schematics to keep it interesting and challenging. Thanks pwblaine, support and suggestions are always helpful and appreciated.

We've considered this possibility before. By the way, take a look at this thread too. We also speak about music: http://forgegame.com/forum/index.php/topic,13.0.htmlAnd I'd like to know what do you think about the soundtrack featured in the tech demo. Except for the first two songs in the preview (which, as you certainly know, have been taken from Loom), all the other content is original. We have 2-3 skilled musicians who helped us so far.

General Discussion / Adventure Gaming - Loom Island / Re: Haven't you always wondered? (LOOM style)

Really interesting considerations, Raster.
Well, in my opinion Chaos is something we have to fight every minutes of our lives, voluntarily (building houses, ordering books on a shelf) or involuntarily (the biological processes that keep us alive). It's like "delaying the iinevitable". If any of you is familiar with Entropy, this can be described as "the natural tendency to chaos" in a really raw and incomplete enunciation.
So the Loom saga symbolises this struggle by giving Chaos an anthropomorphic shape. Guilds must be united and cooperate to be able to keep Chaos at bay, like we "humans" fro every continent should cooperate in order to keep balance in nature.
This is how I see it.
I'm not partial to a personification of Nature though.

Everything Forge / Forge Progress - Melting Pot / Re: Blacksmiths Book of Schematics Fun!

What Duke forgot to say in the first post, is that all schematics in Forge should have a name and a use that somehow resembles some property of metal. So: rust, polish, bend, etc.etc.
Btw, a schematic that makes a metal object shine like a mirror, could be used to blind opponents, for sure. And this is more or less what you suggested, isn't it?

If you're referring to the Glassmakers' scythe I'm afraid it got broken at the end of Loom. So it's impossible for it to be in Chaos' hands in Forge.
But it sure is a weapon of great importance in the story and it's very likely to have a role in the two sequels.

Everything Forge / Forge Progress - Melting Pot / Re: Team's logo and name

Well, we have a name (definitive) and a logo (probably temporary). Quill o' the Wisp, as you can see in the upper-left corner of the page. I'd like it to be animated though, and I'd like to hear suggestions for something cool. I was thinking about a round "will o' the wisp" (which could later transform into the tip of the quill) that could write the team name at it's passage. Then it could go to the position where the tip of the quill actually is, and then the quill itself could fade in. Just an idea. And not an urgent matter for sure.

Well Esn... as you can understand, you art style, which I found interesting, can hardly be used in the Forge. But I'd like to do an adventure game with such a style though! But let's talk about music. Oh, you don't know how much I'd be happy if we could have as many skilled pixel-artists as we have skilled musicians.... I loved Little Tree Pond. Powerfully emotional. And the other two are also good, and especially fit for a video-game, in my opinion. I'm positive that we can found a place for your music, inside the Forge. Let's see what Duke thinks about this possibility.
